It is very difficult, almost impossible for me to separate and isolate anything that I do in life (especially architecture) from the comprehensive totality of life. For me, the essence is the way we understand and live life.
That is why, I wanted to take a break after third year of my architectural studies at CEPT, Ahmedabad -- to explore, introspect and find out more about 'life' and its relation to architecture as well my other pursuits in life. This desire initiated my solitary travels every year for six to eight weeks during the vacation financed by my earnings at my father's office. There was so much learning during this period - - sleeping on the rocks, beaches, park, benches, in temple etc. Observing, meditating, reading, writing, sketching, re-examining, reassessing myself, my journey in life and so on.
My works, tend to reflect my values and strive to address my life concerns of man moving further away from nature, from his fellow human beings and from his own self.
Shirish Beri & associates is an architectural practice with a difference. Shirish Beris office is like his personal studio with only two administrative staff and two trainees. All the initial design sketches, checking of all working drawings etc. happen here, whereas all drawings are done in his different associates (architectural, interior, landscape, structural, construction management, MEP etc.) offices. Thus, the number of staff working on his projects can vary from 15 to 40 persons.
He tends to be quiet choosy in selecting his clients.
This companys forte is the design of institutional buildings for education, healthcare, research and rehabilitation. Many large national and regional level institutes have been designed by them, which have been published in national and international publications.
Ar. Shirish Beris works, which tend to reflect his values and concerns in life have been bearing their distinct mark on modern Indian architecture since 1975. They strive to address his life concerns of man moving further away from nature, from his fellow human beings and from his own self.
Through his work, Shirish Beri probes the multisensory and the immeasurable dimension of space while trying to evoke a reflective pause amidst todays clutter and background noise. He feels that issues of sustainability can be aptly addressed only through the right attitudes and goals. His designs try to achieve an inherent sense of unity and harmony with various natural and man-made elements and forces.
Shirish Beris works have won a number of national / international recognitions and awards.
He has been invited to chair and give talks, slide shows and conduct design workshops in various national / international professional and educational institutions.
Exhibitions, a film and a book on his work has been received very well everywhere.
