Storage (Cabinet / Closet / Wardrobe)
Every home or commercial or business establishment needs a space allocated for storage.
The items to be stored depend on the type and nature of the business.
An office will need filing cabinets and storage of stationery and other utilities,
while a hospitality outlet will need storage space for linen, cutlery and crockery, as well as food items and groceries.
Storage requirements in a home are of multiple types – cookware, clothes, stationery and toys. And this is provided in the form of cabinets, closets, wardrobes, shelves, under-bed storage, overhead lofts, under staircases etc.
Commonly called cupboards in India, a cabinet is a type of storage, often made of wood, used indoors to store household objects such as food, crockery, textiles and liquor, and protect them from dust and dirt. The term cupboard was originally used to describe an open-shelved side table for displaying plates, cups and saucers.
These open cupboards typically had between one and three display tiers, and at the time, a drawer or multiple drawers fitted to them. The word cupboard gradually came to mean a closed piece of furniture.
A cabinet for clothes is usually called a wardrobe or closet. Modern closets can be built into the walls of the house during construction so that they take up no apparent space in the room, or they can be a large, free-standing piece of furniture designed for clothing storage, in which case they are often called a wardrobe or an armoire. Closets are often built under stairs, thereby using awkward space that would otherwise go unused.
