Tierra Design with Bedmar & Shi Architects: Minimalist Landscape Design for Private Residence, New Delhi

Tierra challenges traditional concepts of design and crosses artificial boundaries of design convention. Through its combined disciplines, it is able to fuse buildings, landscape and the environment. It also sees design as a means of heightening human levels of consciousness towards nature and life itself. While Ernesto Bedmar of Bedmar & Shi was entrusted with the architecture of the prestigious private residence for a business family in New Delhi, Tierra Design was roped in to design the landscape. Located in the highly prestigious and beautifully landscaped precincts of the Amrita Shergil Marg and the surrounding locality in Delhi, India, the landscape design had a significant role in the project. The Zen-inspired, minimalistic landscaped spaces are seen punctuating the built forms, subtly integrating themselves into the poetic simplicity of the home, planned as a gradually unraveling sequence of spaces. 

Complementing the architecture, and seamlessly enhancing the narrative, the contemporary landscape borrows elements from traditional Indian garden designs – much the same way as its architecture takes references from the socio-cultural context and climate. Terraces were important spaces in the landscape too, used as they are in the evenings to enjoy the breeze that offers some relief on hot summer days. Tierra’s core design philosophy is amply reflected in this collaborative project.
