Design is a funny word. Some people think design means how it looks. But of course, if you dig deeper, it's really how it works. Steve Jobs

That's a practical and true statement, but do most of our designers really go beyond 'the looks'?

Design is and must be primarily about how it 'works'. Designers do give value to looks, as aesthetics is certainly important. However it is not integral to the design process. No designer, big or small, reputed or lesser known, can alienate himself or herself from how it works. This is basically reiterating the theory of form follows function.

If a designer does not go beyond 'the looks' then probably he is not a designer. For a true designer is one who can see or rather sees the entirety of how it 'works' to how it 'looks'.

Then how does one explain the glass-faced vertical 'office slums' that seem to dominate urban skylines -- when all of us know that it will never work in our climate?

True. The need to excel and create better landmarks prevails above all. Need is defined differently for every project. In luxury buildings and commercial complexes aesthetics and extravagance prevail over simplicity and minimalism..

Being a designer we have to think beyond THE LOOkS...looks is the one part of design without utility it won't work..

the awareness about good design needs to reach the masses
