Painting is a mode of creative expression; an art of applying paint, pigment, color or other medium to a surface. The medium is applied to the surface with a brush but other implements, such as knives, spatulas, sponges and airbrushes can be used. The surface used for painting may be paper, canvas, wood, glass, clay, metal, or concrete. The product created is also called a painting.
Paintings can be naturalistic and representational (as in a still life or landscape painting), photographic, abstract, be loaded with narrative content, symbolism, emotion or they may be political in nature.
