These are large public places used by a large number of people – commuters as well as staff and ancillary workers involved in providing the facility of the transport. Primary factors to be considered in planning are easy flow of people, wheelchair and disabled accesses, security of commuters and workers, adequate restroom and first-aid services, fire protection, evacuation in emergencies etc. The planning must facilitate the processes that the commuters need to follow, in an effective, time-saving manner which ensures easy circulation of people from one counter to another.
Whether an airport, a rail terminal, or a bus depot, these basic planning principles do not vary. The processes/facilities of ticket booking, ticket checking, check-ins, waiting lounges, and boarding remain more or less the same.
