Installation Artists
What are popularly called art installations are a form of sculpture, usually seen in large public buildings or offices. In art, however, the correct nomenclature for the same is installation art. It describes an artistic genre of three-dimensional works that are often site-specific and designed to transform the perception of a space. It may be permanent or temporary, in interior or exterior spaces, and in museums, art galleries or public or corporate buildings. It is seen less frequently in private residences.
In a departure from traditional craft-based sculpture, installation art uses readymade objects and relies on the assemblage of those to create the work. The objects chosen and used make the installation very site-specific and customized to user needs or décor themes or the nature of the establishment. For instance, an installation of objects made from recycled materials can depict the eco-conscious philosophy adopted by the organization.
