I was born and brought up in Bombay (now Mumbai) and have lived here for most of my life. My education as an architect started at the Academy of Architecture in Bombay and as an apprentice to Architect Zal Gobhai. This was followed by post graduate studies in architecture in the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in the US, and as an intern in the office of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM) in New York, and the Urban Design Group of the New York City Planning Commission. I returned to Bombay in early 1971 and started practice in partnership with Architect Noshir Talati, which lasted until mid-1977. That was when I started independent practice in the name of Rumy Shroff & Associates, from the mid-1970s to-date. The architectural concepts exhibited in most of our projects were developed in their essence during the period of my education and training in the United States of America, between 1965 and 1970; much before I commenced my architectural practice in 1971 in Bombay.
