In 'Sensitive Spaces - A Must for Smart Cities' we discussed how senior citizens and others with physical limitations, especially in India, face horribly unfriendly conditions  with almost no facilities at private or public places, guidelines or policies in place to make their lives independent and comfortable. We also mentioned how the physically challenged group of the disabled and elderly get marginalised from using regular facilities due to lack of sensitive design, both indoors and outdoors. Routinely denied access to facilities that enable a normal, independent life due to barriers created by bad design and attitudes, the bathroom, particularly is an indoor space most prone to accidents, when used by the handicapped or seniors!! Help seems finally at hand! ProSafe Living, a Delhi-based Indian company in collaboration with an Italian major, has launched a range of products designed specially to enable this physically challenged group our citizenry to use bathrooms independently and comfortably. Armed with the ‘barrier-free’ concept and intent on bringing global standards to India, ProSafe Living presents an exclusively designed line of elder-friendly bathroom fittings and accessories which have the potential to create a wonderfully inclusive and independent, accident-free bathroom experience for aging and infirm Indian citizens.

Barrier Free Concept

The product line of Prosafe Living is born out of the concept that sensitive design solutions can make essential use spaces like bathrooms more inclusive and the lives of elders and physically challenged individuals less dependent. The advancement of age brings with it physical limitations accompanied by diminishing of senses like vision and hearing, loss of balance, etc. These debilitations increase their dependence on others, especially in negotiating essential spaces like the bathroom, often leading to loss of privacy and dignity, and sometimes even lack of good personal hygiene.  Our loved ones do not have to face barriers in everyday activities and spaces just due to some physical limitations. The principles that form the basis of barrier free design, other than low physical effort, include equitability, flexibility, simple design that lends itself to intuitive or perceptive handling, tolerance of error and optimum space and size for easy approach and use.

Product Line

The Prosafe range of products includes bathroom fixtures ranging from steel grab bars (adjustable, foldable, flexible, fixed) in a variety of sizes, expandable and foldable arm and foot supports, wash basins and WCs with facility adjust their height, fixed and foldable shower seats and many more. Each product is carefully, ergonomically and sensitively designed to take care of most of the perceivable needs and limitations one is faced with in the bathroom.

Installation Support

Prosafe Living products can be ordered and are delivered along with installation support instructions. The products are supplied in accordance with size and other specifications of the client, with suggestion even being given for suitable changes in existing bathrooms on being briefed with pictures and details about the same. This contributes a great deal to ensure a fault free installation and a hassle free period of usage for happy and satisfied customers.

Universal Design, Adjustability and Flexibility

The most remarkable feature of these products is their adjustability and flexibility. Wash basins whose heights can be adjusted as per the users’ comfort or arm supports which expand as per the users’ need are a welcome feature for any bathroom, private or public. Moreover, even the fixing is done through universal designs, where the same fixing point can be used to suspend different fixtures at different times as per the need.

Wide range of Application

Other than in homes, these products have a wide range of applicability which includes bathrooms in hospitals, nursing homes, schools, universities, public places like theatres, convention centres, malls, hotels and banquet halls, old age homes, and even public and private offices. Even other than bathrooms, some of the products can be used to ease the transfer from wheel chairs, lifts, or any such areas. These products are also ideal for use by young children, gym users, people with temporary disabilities like a fracture or even pregnant women.

Easy to Replace

Prosafe Living products being installed using universal fixing creates an added advantage of easy replacability of a fixture after its useful life. We do commend the feature that makes this replacement, in the case of Prosafe products, smooth without disturbing the surrounding infrastructure like tiles and plumbing.

Ranges to suit all Pockets

The Prosafe Living products range covers a wide pricing spectrum from economy to premium, basic products basket costing 15.000/- to a full service premium bathroom costing Rs.2,00,000/- or more. The company is working further at bringing down costs by indigenizing designs and expertise, to make safer bathrooms affordable to more and more elders and disabled in our country.

Materials and Joinery: International Standards

Made from 304 grade steel with equivalent grade joinery which is all imported from Italy, each product comes with a minimum guarantee of 2-5 years. It is encouraging to note, though, that the company claims to have no records of complaints/ faults from customers, and no grievance redressals consequently.

Easy on the Eye

It is often assumed that technical compliance to needs of physical disabilities necessarily results in aesthetically dull designs reminiscent of a cold, hospital rooms. These fixtures by Prosafe Living have thankfully been designed to suit high aesthetic standards in addition to being comfortable and convenient, and are also available in a choice of vibrant colours.

Given all the above features of this product line, we can safely assume that it has a very wide applicability and, moreover, a waiting clientele in India, where lack of facilities has almost moved people to disillusionment. In a speed bound world where no one seems to have the time to care, any assistance in caring for our loved ones is always welcome. The only visible deterrent for these products to find nationwide consumption, as of now, seems to be its restriction to be sold by a single supplier, i.e. M/s Prosafe Living in New Delhi. Though eager to find more distributors and retailers, the company is facing some resistance from these due to its requirement of high technical skills during installation. The company is ready to distribute, hire and train the installation staff; hope someone’s listening and will assist Prosafe Living propel the ‘inclusion revolution’ in India.
