Trends rule décor, and become the talk of the town and the object of desire as long as they last. So, we are here to talk about a trend that is currently doing the rounds internationally, and lends itself decoratively and functionally in equal measure. Holes or perforations are being used on a variety of materials and applications indoors as well as outdoors, and becoming the tools of sophisticated aesthetic expression.

Bruag of Switzerland has introduced perforated innovations in fenestration and window shading that brilliantly steal the show from interiors to exteriors. Perforated aluminium panels that can slide along channels to open and close windows create various brilliant shadow pictures on the interior spaces that change with the changing angle of the sun. At night, the same magic gets created outside, decorating the façade with perforated pictures lit up by the lights shining from the interiors through the holes. What’s more, the designs of these perforations can be customised as required to paint pretty landscapes, floral and leaf patterns, abstracts or even logos! A true marriage of aesthetics and function!

Holeroll from Ukraine have launched unique window blinds that are much more than shading devices; they are brilliant décor elements that can make a significant difference to an interior space. These dark coloured roll up blinds bear perforations on them that let the sunlight filter in delicately, creating a landscape or patterned design as it does so. Many of these perforation patterns are cityscapes – closely packed at the bottom of the panels to depict the dense development, rarefying towards the top which represents the starlit sky. And, beyond creating this grand spectacle at the window, the same plays out in the shadows cast on surfaces inside!

Beyond sliding shutter panels, Bruag has perforated design solutions for all varieties of façade design demands in the form of façade panels. Operating with  material palette of Formboard mounted on Pine, MDF, ply and Cellon (Cellulose and phenol resin laminate board), Bruag achieves a choice of attributes in its façade panels, like precision workability, wear and weather resistance, strength, design freedom, ecological compliance, cost effectiveness, endless variety of colours and designs. So, whether the requirement is to enhance the individuality of an otherwise plain façade, have an operable/dynamic façade for light and ventilation, have different coloured markers for various areas of a school or other organisation, highlight a portion of façade or include graffiti in it – they have perforated design panels to fulfil it!

Coming indoors, perforated panels in the avatar of laser cut metal screens have been making quite an impression with their delicate, sophisticated and universal designs as well as adaptability to multifarious functions. So, whether as space dividers in homes and establishments, pergolas for terraces, automatic gates/ sliding shutters or decorative mirrored wall panels, these laser cut metal screens are universally applicable. The laser cutting technology lends itself easily to any variety and complexity of designs ranging from natural forms to hi-tech patterns, modern art to Mashrabia murals in thousands of hi-finish colours and polishes.

The use of MDF panels for acoustical purposes is well known, but now, these panels come in decorative perforations in a variety of designs. The precision in cutting offered by laser technology is able to make these perforations, not just of finest visual quality, but also of the exacting angles and sizes required by the acoustic design calculations. These panels, which can be used on walls, ceilings as well as independently, are available in customised sizes and décor aligned designs. They can even be provided with holes for speakers or lights as part of the perforated design to create a superiorly composite audio visual experience in any interior space, be it an auditorium, library, restaurant, theatre, office or home.
