Street art started off as a graffiti on bare walls. It has now evolved as a medium to portray visual creativity onto the canvas of street in the form of varied elements that symbolise user-touch points. Artists have taken it a notch higher by including not just walls but roads, structures and stairs as blank slates to display their artwork. In modern scenario, it has also become a movement for awareness wherein artists from different backdrops join hands to create masterpieces within the city envelope. Street art defines an experience that adds liveliness into a space, often used for commuting.

Artworks that were recognised by means of colours and textures have now extended their horizon to numerous elements that act as street art installations. This creative and communicative art sure knows how to attract varied kind of users at all times. Let's take a look at one such interactive and flexible street art.

The Historic Staircase of Santa Maria del Monte

The Staircase of Santa Maria del Monte located in Caltagirone, Sicily, Italy is an example of a transforming and an adaptive street art portrayal. Guiding both the locals and tourists, 142 steps up, it acts as a connection between the higher and lower parts of the city, bonding them by a creative link. The staircase was built way back in 1608 and is dressed with numerous ceramic tiles as an indication of the city's terracotta and ceramic production. Due to its massive and monumental presence, right at the middle of the city, it defines itself as a central piece for local festivals. It is similar to a pivot that holds onto two arms of the city.

Street Art in view of La Scala Flower Festival

This kind of street art is rare and beyond a mainstream one taking place between May and June every year. The innovativeness of placing the plantations in a specific manner reflects an image of leading the visitors to the top of the stairs. The staircase blooms with bright flowers during the La Scala Flower Festival symbolising a masterpiece of art in itself.

Creative Permutations

The artwork is usually placed at the centre of the stairs while either sides are left unobstructed for people to commute smoothly without hampering the circulation quality of a space. The artwork thereby remains as a focal point and can be viewed from both sides and both ends.

A Lighting Beam of Street Art - La Scala Illuminata Festival

On the contrary, during the La Scala Illuminata Festival, the stairs existing from early 17th Century are transformed into a grandeur backdrop by means of arranging numerous candles at varied levels thereby illuminating the entire area and reflecting upon the concept of ongoing festival.

Staircase as a Candle Stick Replica

Now this is exactly where the flexible aspect comes into the picture. The art installation also subtly hints about the approaching festival. Also, every year during flower and light festivals, the design of the installation changes; thus keeping alive the sense of anticipation and excitement for visitors.

Overall, street art has become a game-changer in urban settings. The practice of creatively using the most mundane areas and transforming them into lively, vibrant and enriching spaces can really alter cityscapes.
