STHETIX today is the continuation of a passion that motivated the Late Sheila Pasricha to scour the
Rajasthan area for craftsmen who could translate her design ideas into reality. More than 40 years
ago she wanted to promote application of marble/stone beyond flooring. The traditional perception
and usage of hand carved stone was that it was for mandirs and palaces to enhance grandeur in
large scale and for large structures, and also for ornamental usage for idols or statues. She was
aware that changes brought about by urban living and the smaller spaces available for homes. She
would require different proportions in design and that in turn required a higher quality result in
terms of fineness and lightness from traditional Indian craftsmen working on marble. She started her
focus exclusively on crafted marble bases which would have utility to be converted into lamps if
customer required. The intent was not to trade the skill of craftsmen BUT to also change their
process norms. Sthetix identified the few and has supported them now for the thrid generation
which works to push the boundaries of their skills for greater detailing and fineness not seen before.
This became possible based on the support given to craftsmen to take risk by mitigating their
potential loss from “failure and breakage”. Once the craftsman was not scared of loss through their
breakage then they themselves pushed their own skills. Gradually and over the years the ability now
is to now make each element finer, including hollowing out the stone post carving to make it
thinner, enabling inner soft lighting to come through the stone. Though stone is heavy the pieces
made about 75% lighter than conventional marble elements that are seen hand carved. This high
quality legacy remains alive today and though it remains a low volume enterprise the plan is always
to take the craft to new heights adapting design for modern and new environments while preserving
the “Sthetix” culture which has been developed over the decades.
