Despite being an island city with a history of being dependent on the sea for food, transport and commerce there is no major cultural facility focused on Mumbai’s rich coast and coastal waters. Nor is there a museum dedicated to naval history past and present. There is a need to establish a modern,professionally run maritime museum to remind the City of its rich maritime culture and heritage and recreate an interest in the minds of its people towards its preservation.
There has been a long standing debate about opening up the eastern waterfront to the public.With the shifting of port activities to JNPT and Uran, Bhaucha Dhakka or Ferry wharf is one such site that can be adapted for public use.
