Despite being an island city with a history of being dependent on the sea for food, transport and commerce there is no major cultural facility focused on Mumbai’s rich coast and coastal waters. Nor is there a museum dedicated to naval history past and present. There is a need to establish a modern,professionally run maritime museum to remind the City of its rich maritime culture and heritage and recreate an interest in the minds of its people towards its preservation.
The design evolves from the shape of a boat, held up by the sail (admin block). The two arms of the boat form the auditorium and the museum while the negative space between them becomes the auditorium.
