Vardenchi - a brand synonymous with customized motorcycles; is a word derived simply from Marathi, in which it means “belonging to Varde”. And belong it does, to Akshai Varde – a passionate and talented young man driven by the belief that the process of custom motorcycle building is a co-creation between the company and the customer.

Manjri Varde, an artist, and also Akshai’s mother; famous for her calligraphic cavorts into the realms of art, fashion and interior accessories found a new ‘canvas’ to display her amazing skills – on a Vardenchi!

Here’s a peep into the making of the Vardenchi – a brilliant piece of “calligraphy and the art of customized motorcycles”!

“Vardenchi Motorcycles was started with the pure passion of seeing beautiful works of art on the streets of India,” says Akshai. “Each Vardenchi is more like a work of art, rather than a hunk of hot metal and wheels. It is designed to cater to the rider’s individual needs, with stringent quality control techniques to ensure each machine not only looks spectacular but rides with superlative quality. We use the Royal Enfield as a base but build most of the custom parts in-house,” he informs.

The Sunburn chopper – a signature Vardenchi bike - has been carefully handcrafted to reflect the style, attitude and class of the Sunburn festival. “Being the brand mascot of one of the top electronic music festivals in the world, we wanted the Sunburn chopper to be an exclusive machine with bold contemporary styling, top of the line engineering and features, making these bikes the envy of every Sunburn fan,” he explains.

But although each Vardenchi is a stunning piece of metal and machismo, this one with Manjri’s calligraphic rendering is just a class apart! At a Sunburn festival hosted in Goa, a ‘Live Build’ event was organized where Manjri painted the Hanuman Chalisa on the bike in the presence of a large audience; and the bike was assembled right there! All the DJs and Bands that performed at Sunburn, were featured on the bikes.

The significant point, however, is that the delicacy of the lettering does not take away from its x-factor –in fact, the black and white rendition of stylized letters – in Manjri’s unique brand of calligraphy called AumAkshar (a unique font she invented to write English in the Devnagari style) gives a sharper edge to its zing.

The innovative styling of Sunburn, the interactive ‘live build’ concept, and the output that can be seen all support the founder Akshai Varde’s claim that “Vardenchi offers end to end solutions in every area of custom motorcycle building, from sheet metal fabrication, structural fabrication to an in-house painting and assembly unit. These motorcycles are all about personality, attitude and looking great. A keen sense of design that arises from actually riding and experiencing the products on a day to day basis is the key. The entire process from sketching the concept to 3D designing the parts and assemblies and creating prototypes at every stage to check for quality and fit and finish makes a huge difference to the final product. The result is not just a motorcycle, but an extension of the rider’s personality.”

We are inclined to agree! This absolutely spectacular creation adapting the art of calligraphy to a customized motorcycle surely makes a Vardenchi an extension of its rider's personality and philosophy!
