IIID MRC invites you to attend a Webinar Series: Parametric Algorithms in Design – an initiative powered by Hybec Lighting.

Mentored by Ar. Rajesh Patel, co-ordinated by Ar. Milind Pai and moderated by Mr. Conrad Gonsalves – the Webinar Series will see four very talented Indian design studios sharing their work and ideology; focusing on the use of parametric algorithms in their explorations.

Starting with Ar. Amit Gupta (28th April Tuesday), Ar. Sushant Verma (29th April, Wednesday), and Ar. Nuru Karim (30th April, Thursday), the series concludes with Ar. Seeja Sudhakaran and Ar. Khushbu Davda (1st May, Friday).

Parametric Algorithms in Design

Parametric Algorithms?! What on earth is that…is a question that may arise in the minds of people not connected with design and architecture; and oftentimes even in the minds of related professionals! It is not a term often used, simply because it is not a design vocabulary commonly seen! Also, possibly because it is not a design style, but rather a tool of design thinking that could be the basis of what is loosely termed as ‘post-modern’ design. Whether they actually can be categorized as post-modernism itself is a polemic; but terms like ‘contemporary’ and ‘futuristic’ conveniently fill the voids, and avert serious debate.

With structural limitations in construction being overcome by multiple material and technological innovations, digital tools and software further kindle the creative mind! Simply put – parametric algorithms are the basis of those funky structures we see splashed across magazines! The ‘wow’ factor then, is a result of the process of juxtaposing algorithmic thinking onto standard design parameters. That process gives rise to structural expressions that defy the paradigm, a critical factor in most of the past decade’s ‘starchitecture’, too.

The term Parametric Algorithms at once brings to mind the works of celebrated architect Zaha Hadid – probably the most iconic exponent of this design paradigm! The use of parametric algorithms is relatively less explored in India; but here too, the past decade has seen a significant spike in its explorations.

The IIID MRC Webinar Series on ‘Parametric Algorithms in Design’ introduces the concept to a larger audience with eminent practitioners such as Amit Gupta, Studio Symbiosis, Stuttgart; Sushant Verma, rat[LAB], Delhi; Nuru Karim, NUDES, Mumbai; and Seeja Sudhakaran and Khushbu Davda of Studio Emergence, Mumbai.

Ar. Amit Gupta, Studio Symbiosis, Stuttgart

Ar. Amit Gupta, Founding Partner, Studio Symbiosis focuses on a multi-disciplinary practice; where design is a process resulting from an interface between nature (site or landscape) and cutting-edge technology. The studio headquartered in Stuttgart brings together various systems and sub systems of landscape, building typology, environmental considerations, and structural tectonic; in an attempt to create architecture that would resonate our present times. Complex design tools such as simulation, animation and form-finding tools, as well as parametric modeling and scripting are employed, to create architecture with an inherent quality of fluidity.

Ar. Sushant Verma, rat[LAB}, Delhi

Ar. Sushant Verma, Founding Partner/Design Head at rat[LAB] Studio (Research in Architecture and Technology) is a multifaceted personality encompassing roles as varied as Design Entrepreneur, Architect, Computational Designer and Educator! The studio investigates intersections of design, art and technology through architecture, interior design and art installations. Former architect at Zaha Hadid Architects, London, Sushant, much like the Grand Dame herself, questions the static nature of architectural spaces and infuses dynamism and motion with a complex interplay of form and context.

A noteworthy fact about rat[LAB]’s work ethic is that they had enabled themselves to collaborate with specialists across the world, in a virtual data space using modern technology such as cloud networking systems – long before Covid-19 forced a global lockdown and the work-from-home concept became the norm!

Ar. Nuru Karim, NUDES, Mumbai

Ar. Nuru Karim, Founder & Principal - Nudes, is one of the best-known faces of parametric algorithms in India. His work displays cross-disciplinary interfaces between art, architecture and computational design powered by digital tools; and addresses larger social, cultural and environmental contexts.  The bold dynamics of his work generate a debate of form vis-a-vis function; and overtly question the norm. Having worked with Zaha Hadid Architects on a number of projects in 2005, Nuru’s work too reflects a snazzy disdain for the mundane!

Nuru Karim is also a TEDx speaker (2019) and has presented his work and research on national and international platforms.

Ar. Seeja Sudhakaran and Ar. Khushbu Davda, Studio Emergence, Mumbai

Ar. Seeja Sudhakaran and Ar. Khushbu Davda, co-founders and principal architects of Studio Emergence, a Mumbai-based practice are ardent practitioners of parametric algorithms! Both armed with a Masters in Advanced Design and Digital Architecture from Spain – the young architects believe in providing data-driven design solutions; integrating computation-based technology to the existing workflow. Their work is inspired by nature; so biomimicry plays a significant part in their works.
