TFOD Profile Of The Week: Artist Sadashiv Sawant, Mumbai

Inspired by some amazing works on the internet, Sadashiv Sawant started doing pencil drawings a couple of years back. The self-taught artist today has a plethora of brilliant renderings in pencil. Focusing on faces; and capturing emotions and expressions – is his forte. Recently, at the felicitation of Ar. Hafeez Contractor by IIID Mumbai Regional Centre, TFOD recommended the artist’s name for the token of appreciation they wished to present to the legendary architect. The architect’s love for sketching, we thought, would be appropriately reflected in a sketch of him!

And thus the artist added yet another feather to his cap – with a sketch of Ar. Hafeez Contractor to his credit! Here’s a peep into the world of Sadashiv Sawant – this week’s TFOD Profile Of The Week

The Wikipedia defines a sketch as “a rapidly executed freehand drawing that is not usually intended as a finished work. A sketch may serve a number of purposes: it might record something that the artist sees, it might record or develop an idea for later use or it might be used as a quick way of graphically demonstrating an image, idea or principle.”  The term is most often applied to graphic work executed in a dry medium such as silverpoint, graphite, pencil, charcoal, or pastel.

However, some artists hone the art of sketching in a way that it does not remain a rough sketch; but in fact becomes the main drawing itself. Artistic talent is a gift, but often social and economic pressures compel people to take up different careers and art takes a backseat. It is then up to the individual to pursue it as a hobby, and continue to improve their skills. A similar story unfolds in the life of TFOD- artist and our current Profile Of The Week – Sadashiv Sawant

A mechanical engineer by education, and working in the field of architectural visualization since the last two decades, Sadashiv Sawant is a brilliant artist – with a mastery over the art of pencil sketching. The career in architectural visualization was also chosen because of his passion for drawing and painting. However, the pursuit of drawing as a hobby remained with him, getting polished and refined over time.

A couple of years back, accidentally viewing some sketches on the net inspired him to try pencil drawings more seriously. And in that he enjoys drawing close-ups of faces. “The human face and various facial expressions is the most interesting subject for me to draw,” he says. And what faces he draws! The hyper-realistic style of sketching makes the faces come alive. The twinkle in the eyes, the cherubic innocence in a child’s smile, hair blown by the wind, the wrinkles and crinkles on an aged face, the musings and reflections on a thoughtful face – all are captured brilliantly by the strokes of Sawant’s pencil!

Whether it's the charming Sean Connery or the revered Pramukh Swami Maharaj, the gorgeous Kate Winslet or the stunning Katrina Kaif - or the numerous angelic lttle girls, or Gattu, the cat - each 'face' is a splendid, life-like rendition!

We, at TFOD, feel extremely privileged to showcase the talent of this gifted artist, and wish him more success in his artistic pursuits!
