Murals are an exciting art form. With a virtually endless palette of materials to explore, and canvases ranging from small (home/office walls, gardens, courtyards) to large (building facades and public spaces) – indeed, there is no need to rein in your imagination!

Sara Kurien’s journey into mural art, however is as colourful as the murals she makes! An engineer by qualification, Sara was attracted towards the arts and she did a course in stained-glass painting. One thing led to another, and she eventually started exploring other art forms. Murals, apparently, caught her fancy – and she started creating beautiful pieces with glass and ceramics, and became a self-taught mosaic artist. Soon, she built up a veritable collection.

Enough, it seems, for she then set up a studio-shop in 2012 – in Koramangala, the hub of the city.

Tesserae – which means ‘small blocks of stone, tile, glass, or other material used in the construction of a mosaic’ – was the word that lent itself quite appropriately to the store. Displaying Sara’s amazing creations – mosaic-based accessories such as intricately designed table tops, lampshades, mirrors, trays, garden accessories and even items like chess boards and nameplates – Tesserae showcases the artist’s amazing talent

Besides the objects already made and put up for sale, Sara offers to custom-design mosaic accessories and murals for specific spaces or themes, and suited for individual preference and budget. Working with a vast variety of materials such as ceramic tile, stained glass, pebbles and mirror; Tesserae also collaborates with architects and interior designers, to undertake and execute exclusive mosaic projects.

Indeed, it is delightful to see talented individuals from all over the country coming together to display their creative passion on a single platform of TFOD – The Future Of Design! We wish Sara Kurien and Tesserae much success on the vibrant journey ahead of them.
