Hafele – TFOD Profile of the Week: Ar. Karthikeyan Perumal, Chennai

Karthikeyan Perumal studied architecture at the under graduate level at Hindustan College of Architecture, Madras University and did his postgraduate course from School of Architecture and Planning, Anna University, Chennai. He then went on to train initially and gain experience at SCI, Singapore under American landscape architect Marg Mahan and then at RAA, Chennai under landscape architect Ravi Kumar. He set up his own architectural practice, D-Sign K Studio pvt. ltd at Chennai in 2007.

In addition to his primary architectural design firm, Ar. Perumal has also set up a landscape design firm named Signscape Design Studio and an interior design firm named Interior D-sign K Studio under his proprietorship. His practice provides services mainly in residential architectural design commercial interiors.  He is also associated with other firms, including his mentor firms in Singapore and Chennai, in the capacity of architectural and landscape design consultant. 

Acoustical consultancy, architectural, building automation, colour consultancy, decor styling, electrical consultancy, furniture design, Interior designer, kitchen / bathroom consultancy, landscape design, lighting designer, plumbing Consultancy, structural consultancy, vastushastra and feng shui form the bouquet of services offered by D-Sign K Studio.

In all his designs, Ar. Karthikeyan Perumal displays a comprehensive knowledge about materials and their application in bringing to fruition his clients’ dreams for their homes and offices. His interior decor projects are suffused with a wide range of surfaces and textures, interplaying in a veritable collage. Armed with sound technical background and well tuned to his clients’ tastes and requirements, Ar. Perumal has captured the imagination, and consequently a sizable portion of the residential and commercial design service market, of Chennai.   

Ascribing, as professed by him, to the architect the role of selecting and applying what best fits a specific project instead of chasing impossible ambitions, he has built up a practice which is aesthetically pleasing, technically sound and commercially astute. He also acknowledges, through his work, the awareness of an architects’ role in creating structures and spaces which contribute to a larger civic role of enabling and enriching the community.
